West Coast Alternate

The West Coast Alternate Program is a collaborative, community-based holistic approach to providing comprehensive school and social programming, designed specifically to support youth living with FASD. The program is a partnership between the Vancouver Board of Education (Templeton Secondary) and PCRS The purpose of this program is to reduce the long-term individual and societal impacts of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) by educating and socializing youth so that they can integrate in society with (optimal) support.West Coast Alternate offers a supportive educational and behavioural environment for individuals whose needs cannot be met in a regular school program, even with necessary modifications.  Students in this program are provided with friendly, skilled academic and social supports, in a safe location to meet their academic and social goals.

Pacific Community Resources provides a Part-Time Coordinator, one youth & family counselor, who provides student and family support and facilitates after school and school break programming, and part-time cook. The Vancouver Board of Education two full time teachers and one Alternate Program Worker

Coastal Health provides funding for a Pre-Employment Facilitator (P.T.) & one Support worker who facilitates work - experience placements for older students. This funding also provides for cultural activities to occur.

PROGRAM FEATURES

Objectives

Short term:  To improve school attendance; increase levels of participation across all academic and social activities to increase the degree of resiliency for FASD affected youth participating in this program.

Long Term:  To support students impacted by FASD to successfully complete High School graduation, and/or to attach to positive social activities including employment


Length of Service

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Students referred to the program:
- Have been medically diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
- Reside within the Vancouver School Board boundaries
- Have an IQ of 70 or greater

Referrals go to Central Screening of the Vancouver School Board

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN THIS PROGRAM?
Students will help with the creation of their individualized education plan and with the help of staff will identifiy and take steps towards meeting their goals.
